Arkansas Magazine Study Abroad Photo Contest Rules

Term

Arkansas Magazine’s Photo Contest begins Aug. 1, 2008, and ends April 26, 2010, at 5 p.m. Central Standard Time (CST). By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that they are 18 years old and older.

Who May Enter

University of Arkansas students and alumni, ages 18 and over, who have participated, or are currently participating, in a University of Arkansas-sponsored study abroad program.

Entry Deadline

All digital entries must be received by e-mail at 5 p.m. Central Standard Time, April 26, 2010.

A camera provided by Bedford Camera & Video and an Individual Life Membership in the Arkansas Alumni Association

All winners and honorable mentions will also receive a copy of the summer 2010 issue of the Arkansas magazine. Winners may also receive additional prizes.

What to Enter

The three contest categories are:
• People – Individuals from all walks of life.
• Physical – Plants, animals, landscapes, geology, topography or climate.
• Arts – Ceremonies, artifacts, works of art and architecture.

(Updated: 2/8/2010) Photographs must have been shot by the entrant between January 1, 2003, and the end of the contest, April 26, 2010, therefore recent graduates and current students who participated in study abroad during the specified period are eligible.

Cropped photos are eligible in all categories. We do not accept digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered photos. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging and burning, contrast and slight color adjustment or the digital equivalents, are acceptable for all three categories. If our judges see that a photographer has obviously altered his or her photo, they reserve the right to disqualify it.

Photographs that have been published in magazines and newspapers (except online) are not eligible for entry in this contest. Photos that violate or infringe upon another person’s copyright are also not eligible.

Judging

Judging will be conducted by a panel of alumni, faculty and staff. Winning photographs and selected finalists will be published in a summer 2010 issue of Arkansas magazine. Decisions of the judges will be final.

The Association has selected a distinguished panel of judges includes Michael Peven, an art professor and photography teacher at the University of Arkansas; Art Meripol BA’77 and senior photographer for Southern Living Magazine; and Russell Cothren, longtime University of Arkansas photographer and photo editor.

A winning and honorable mention photo will be selected in each category. The grand prize winner will be chosen from three (3) finalists.

All winners and honorable mentions will be notified of their status by May 4, 2010. Entrants who do not win or receive an honorable mention will not be notified.

The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. Arkansas magazine reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. Decisions of Arkansas magazine will be final.

Photo Submission Criteria & Rules

We do not accept photographs submitted through the mail please email all entries to editor@uark.edu. Submit no more than one (1) photograph per category. We do not accept more than one contestant per e-mail address.

High-quality scans of non-digital photographs are acceptable. Digital photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible.

By entering the contest, all material submitted to the university (the "Submissions") become the property of the university and will not be returned. Without affecting any of your ownership rights to the Submission, by submitting your Submission, you grant the university an irrevocable royalty-free, worldwide right, in all media (now known or later developed) to use, publish, alter or otherwise exploit your Submission and to sublicense such rights to a licensee at the university's discretion. You hereby forever release the university and any of its licensees from any and all claims you might have in connection with its use and exhibit of your Submission as set forth above. You also agree to sign any necessary documentation to effectuate that license and release. Your Submission must be your own original work and, by submitting your Submission, you represent and warrant that: it is your sole original work; and you have obtained any and all consents, approvals or licenses required for you to submit your Submission (including obtaining the written consent of all 3rd parties, where applicable). Your submission must not contain material which is violent, pornographic or otherwise obscene, illegal or racially or otherwise morally offensive. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the university, its parents, subsidiaries and affiliated companies, each of their respective licensees, successors and assigns, and each of their respective employees, agents, representatives, officers and directors from and against any and all claims, losses, costs, damages, liabilities, losses, costs and expenses (including, without limitation, attorneys; fees) which arise out of any breach of this agreement or any of these covenants, agreements, obligations, rights, representations or warranties set forth herein. You waive any claim of infringement (including without limitation copyright, trademark, patent, trade name, trade secret, etc.) against the university or its licensees based upon access to or use of your Submission. If you do not want to grant the university the foregoing, please do not submit your Submission. The university is not obligated to use the Submission.
    
Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit.
