College of Engineering Offers Applied Machine Learning Intensive for Summer
|
Over the summer the University of Arkansas team will host the AMLI with two other campuses, the University of Kentucky and Morgan State University. The bootcamp aims to introduce underrepresented minority (URM) students to advanced concepts in artificial intelligence/machine learning using Google Education’s open-sourced curriculum.

Industrial Engineering Professors Win Innovations in Education Award
|
Manuel Rossetti, University Professor of Industrial Engineering and Chase Rainwater, Associate Professor and Associate Department Head of Industrial Engineering, were recognized at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Annual Conference & Expo with the Innovations in Education Award, based on their work in designing, developing, and implementing a required, two-semester course sequence in computing for students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) at the University of Arkansas.

Parnell Recipient of Distinguished Engineering Educator Award
|
Greg Parnell, professor of practice and director of Master of Science in Operations Management (MSOM) and Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM), is the inaugural recipient of the 2021 Joint ASEE SED/INCOSE Outstanding Systems Engineering Educator Award. According to the International Council on Systems Education (INCOSE) the award “recognizes an individual, who provides/provided outstanding contributions in the field of systems engineering education and/or the education of systems engineering.”

First National Science Foundation Research Experience for Teachers Site in Arkansas
|
|
Shengfan Zhang, associate professor and Eric Specking, assistant dean for recruitment and retention, received a grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the first ever Research Experience for Teachers site in Arkansas. The “Arkansas Data Analytics Teacher Alliance program,” known as AR-DATA, will provide thirty 9th-12th grade mathematics, computer science and pre-engineering teachers with transformative research experiences that are thematically centered on data analytics with engineering applications aimed at smart and connected health, infrastructure and community.

University Partners on New COVID-19 Antibody Test and Prevalence Study
|
The new antibody test was developed and is manufactured at Springdale, Arkansas, based NOWDiagnostics with technology created with the help of U of A chemical engineers. The trademarked ADEXUSDx COVID-19 antibody test is a rapid-results, self-contained fingerstick test that accurately detects the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in 15 minutes.

College of Engineering Celebrates Top Students…
|
Every year, a graduating senior is named as the College Outstanding Senior. This person is truly an example of the values of the College of Engineering. The student has excelled academically and has taken advantage of other opportunities, such as internships and design projects, which allowed them to learn new skills and develop as an engineer. Madeline Suellentrop, a senior industrial engineering major, was named the College of Engineering 2021 Outstanding Senior. Suellentrop spoke at the college's commencement ceremony May 7.

The Department of Industrial Engineering recognizes students each spring at the Annual Industrial Engineering Student Awards Banquet. This year, the banquet was changed to a ceremony and held virtually, as the coronavirus was still an issue.

Seniors Complete Two-Semester Capstone Projects
|
During the 2020-21 academic year, 65 industrial engineering seniors participated in the Industrial Engineering Capstone Experience as part of 14 teams of 3-5 students. The teams are matched with an industrial partner and led by a student project manager. Every student pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at the University of Arkansas is required to complete the two-semester course sequence.

Seniors Earn Scholarship From National Honor Society
|
Two industrial engineering seniors have earned national scholarships from Alpha Pi Mu, the industrial engineering honor society. The society provides only five scholarships nationally each year.

Doctoral Candidate Recipient of RAMS Student Paper Award
|
Samira Karimi and professors Haitao Liao and Ed Pohl were the second place winner of the Thomas L. Fagan, Jr., RAMS Student Paper Award. They presented the paper, “Covariate Selection Considering Measurement Error with Application in Accelerated Life Testing,” at RAMS 2020. They were honored with a plaque and honorarium at the RAMS 2021 conference in January 2021.

Doctoral Industrial Engineering Student Recognized with International Best Paper Award
|
Each year, the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) selects papers from among all those published in the Systems Engineering journal over the previous year and publishes them in a special Best Paper Virtual Issue. The editorial board considers the papers in this virtual issue to be among the best from those published and includes insight into the latest research and developments in systems engineering. Industrial engineering doctoral student Nick Shallcross was included in those selected as the best in the 2020 virtual issue for his contribution, "Set-Based Design: The state-of-practice and research opportunities."

I.E. Student Finalist for Prestigious Post-Graduate Athletic Scholarship
|
Kayla McKeon was nominated by the University of Arkansas for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship. Kayla received her B.S.I.E. in summer of 2020. In spring 2020 she was selected as an Outstanding Team Member of the Industrial Engineering Capstone Experience Symposium.

I.E. Alum Appointed to National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine Panel
|
Josh McGee has been appointed to a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine panel charged with making recommendations that will inform the National Center for Education Statistics' priorities through the remainder of the decade. Over the next year, the "A Vision and Roadmap for Education Statistics in 2030 and Beyond" panel will meet to develop recommendations and draft a consensus report. The work is being funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
