NSF Awards Grant to Study Use of AI to Improve Sustainable Energy Infrastructure Network

 

The National Science Foundation has awarded researchers from industrial engineering, electrical engineering and computer science at the U of A $1.45 million to investigate of the potential of artificial intelligence as a driving force for changes to critical infrastructures and industries.

Liu Selected as Faculty Member of the Year

Assistant Professor Xiao Liu was recognized as Faculty Member of the Year by the Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering.

 

Liu had an outstanding year, publishing four journal articles, giving 13 presentations and submitting 11 proposals, eight as principal investigator and three as co-PI. He has two active National Science Foundation grants that total more than $690,000.

Hoyt Purvis Award Recipients Honored by Graduate School and International Education

 

Bryan Hill, associate dean for student success in the College of Engineering is the recipient of the 2021 Hoyt H. Purvis Award for Service in International Education.

The award recognizes a university faculty member, a university staff member and Graduate School and International Education staff member for their outstanding service to the field of international education.

Pohl Recipient of Distinguished Award in Operations Research

 

Ed Pohl, professor and department head of industrial engineering, has received the 2021 J. Steinhardt Prize from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to military operations research and honors a person's life work rather than any particular contribution. The selection committee is composed of previous award winners.

Student News

University of Arkansas' Coleman Warren Selected as 2022 Rhodes Scholar

Coleman Warren, an honors industrial engineering and political science senior, has just been named a 2022 Rhodes Scholar for graduate study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Elliot F. Gerson, American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust, announced the names of the 32 Americans chosen as Rhodes Scholars representing the United States on Saturday.

 

Warren, a native of Farmington, is also a 2021 Truman Scholar. In addition, he is the recipient of the Chancellor's Scholarship and the Governor's Distinguished Scholarship as well the Industrial Engineering Sophomore Scholar Award, an Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineers Scholarship, and the Gold President's Volunteer Service Award.

Student Honor Society Chapter Receives National Award

 

The U of A Chapter of Alpha Pi Mu in Industrial Engineering has been selected as the second-place winner of the Outstanding Chapter award from the National Headquarters.

 

The award recognizes the chapter's activities in three categories: chapter and university activities, betterment of the field of industrial engineering and betterment of the national society.

First-Year Master of Science in Operations Management Student Awarded Fellowship

Layla David, a first-year graduate student in the Master of Science in Operations Management program at the U of A, was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Lever Tuition Fellowship. This highly competitive award is presented to students who reflect the university's commitment to academics and diversity.

 

In 2021, David graduated from the Sam M. Walton College of Business with a B.S.B.A. in management with an organizational leadership concentration. David was looking for a graduate program to complement her business degree and found the M.S.O.M. program.

Industrial Engineering Staff Recognized for Excellence

 

Sandy Sehon, Ashley Reeves and Tamara Ellenbecker were recognized individually over the fall semester. Sehon, a team member for 12 years, who serves as the Fiscal Analyst in the department was recognized as the College of Engineering Employee of the First Quarter of 2021. With Sandy's award this makes six of the past seven years a member of the Industrial Engineering team has had this honor.

 

Ashley Reeves, Assistant to the Department Head, was the recipient of the Administrative Staff Member of the year award from the Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering. Reeves joined the U of A in 2011, and came to the I.E. department in the MSOM/MSEM programs in 2016, then moved over to her current role in December of 2018.

 

Ellenbecker who works as the Media Specialist/Web Manager, was recognized as the Employee of the Fourth Quarter/Administrative 2020-2021 for the campus, then also selected as the Support Staff Member of the Year by the Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering. Tamara has been with the department for 15 years.

We have two new members added to our Master of Science in Operations Management/Engineering Management Team this semester; Megan Whobery and Joy Jenkins.

 

Megan has been working in higher education and student services for 10 years. She joins MSOM/MSEM as an Academic Advisor and Academic Coordinator.

 

Joy earned her undergraduate degree in I.E. in 2019 and her graduate certification in Technical Writing and Public Rhetorics in 2021, Joy is now the Administrative Specialist III for MSOM/MSEM and a freelance technical editor.

College of Engineering Celebrates Alumni
at Awards Banquet

College of Engineering alumni, faculty, staff and guests gathered Saturday to induct four new members into its Hall of Fame and recognize 34 alumni with Distinguished Alumni Awards and Early Career Awards.

 

The college was forced to postpone its banquets in spring 2020 and spring 2021 and chose to recognize those groups together this fall, albeit with a smaller celebration than is customary.

 

The black-tie event featured dinner and an awards ceremony led by Dean Needy and co-hosts Charles Zimmerman and John Miller, with remarks by U of A interim Provost Terry Martin.

John A. White Jr., Grady E. Harvell and James E. McClelland Jr. (left to right) were inducted into the College of Engineering Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Rogers Convention Center. In addition, McClelland's father, J.E. McClelland Sr., was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame.
 

Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering Inducts Members, Announces Faculty, Staff Awards

The Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineers, faculty, staff, family and friends joined together virtually on the evening of Oct. 29 to celebrate the induction of 13 new members, eight in the class of 2020 and five in the class of 2021.

The academy delayed the event, normally held in April, and later decided to induct both classes virtually this fall.
