Taha Publishes 50th Anniversary Edition of
'Operations Research'

Hamdy Taha, emeritus professor of industrial engineering, has published the 50th anniversary edition of Operations Research: An Introduction. Since its inception in 1971 and now in its 11th edition, the textbook has been widely adopted by academic institutions in the U.S. and around the world.

 

The book introduces and teaches operations research basics, focusing on the algorithmic and practical implementation of operations research techniques.

MSOM Graduate First Woman Commander of USS Constitution

 

University of Arkansas alumna Cmdr. Billie J. Farrell became the 77th commanding officer of the USS Constitution on Friday, Jan. 21, and the first woman to serve as captain in the ship’s 224-year history.

 

Farrell is a native of Paducah, Kentucky, and is a 2004 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, where she earned a Bachelor of Science, and the U of A, earning a Master of Science in Operations Management in 2009 while serving in the Navy.

The U of A Teaching Academy inducted eight new Fellows for the 2021-22 academic year.

 

Included in the inductees were two industrial engineering faculty members; Dr. Ashlea Bennett Milburn and Dr. Kelly Sullivan.

Ed Pohl Named Editor-in-Chief of Military Operations Research Journal

Ed Pohl, professor and head of the Industrial Engineering Department, was recently announced as the editor-in-chief of the Military Operations Research Society Journal. The journal publishes articles that describe operations research methodologies and theories used in key military and national security applications.

 

Pohl's work is widely published in peer-reviewed publications, and he has received numerous awards and honors, both military and academic, including the J. Steinhardt Prize for lifetime achievement in military operations research.

Karl Schubert Elected Senior Member of Institute

Karl Schubert, professor of practice, has been elected to senior member status with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Senior member is the highest grade which IEEE members can achieve, with only 10 percent of more than 400,000 members having reached the rank.

 

Schubert serves as the associate director for the multidisciplinary Data Science Program

Student Success in a Post-Covid Environment

Is the pandemic over? That remains to be seen. What is evident is the impact of the past two and a half years on academic performance of students in all age groups.

The March Wally Cordes Chair: Conversations with Colleagues event was held April 1. Tish Pohl, teaching associate professor of industrial engineering, spoke on the topic "Student Success in a Post-Covid Environment." Pohl is the advisor for over 200 undergraduate industrial engineering students.

Chimka Editor of Recently Published Poetry
Collection by John Stoss

Justin Chimka, an associate professor of industrial engineering, has edited a recently published collection of poems by John Stoss, former U of A student and author of one of the original 12 books published by Lost Roads, the now legendary press started by Frank Stanford and C.D. Wright in 1977.

 

Nobody Loves Me: Collected Poems of John Stoss contains more than 50 years of work, including the poems "No Dogs Allowed in the Cemetery," "Nobody Loves Me" and "Always Looking for a Safe Place."

IE Senior Takes Home Top Undergraduate Prize at Manitoba Startup Competition

A locally sourced ice cream company founded by a U of A student won first place and $10,000 in an international student startup competition hosted by the University of Manitoba.

Simple + Sweet Creamery captured the Undergraduate Business Plan Competition of the Stu Clarke New Venture Championships. Coleman Warren, a senior studying industrial engineering, established the company as a way to battle hunger and food insecurity in Northwest Arkansas.

Operations Management Program
Awards Scholarship

Antonella Godoy is the latest recipient of the scholarship offered by the Master of Science in Operations Management program. The award is based on academic achievement and financial need.

 

Godoy moved to Fordyce, Arkansas, and quickly decided to pursue her M.S. in operations management. Starting off in an administrative position, she quickly moved up in the company where she was working and found that operations management was an area she really enjoyed. Family and friends recommended the U of A.

Industrial Engineering Seniors Earn Scholarships from National Honor Society

Natalia Sandhu, Shantal Sarmiento, and Coleman Warren photo

Three industrial engineering seniors have earned national scholarships from Alpha Pi Mu, the industrial engineering honor society.

Senior Natalia Sandhu received the 2021-22 Paul E. Givens Diversity Scholarship.

Senior Shantal Sarmiento also received a scholarship from Alpha Pi Mu: the 2021-22 John L. Imhoff Globalization Scholarship.

Coleman Warren received the 2021-22 Alpha Pi Mu Scholarship. Warren is the current Associated Student Government president.

Staff News

 

College of Engineering Staff Council Organizes Gift
to Local Homeless Shelter

In early December, the College of Engineering Staff Council challenged departments to see which one could gather the most donations to assemble "care kits" for 7Hills Homeless Center, a day center that provides services such as meals, food, clothing and hygiene items to homeless residents.

 

The response was enthusiastic, with the departments contributing enough goods to fill 55 shower kits, 55 hygiene kits and 70 food bags.

Staff Member Named College of Engineering Employee of the Second Quarter

 

Jerra Hill, fiscal analyst in the Industrial Engineering Department, was named Employee of the Second Quarter for the College of Engineering. This award recognizes staff who play an integral part in the college's daily routines.

 

Hill has been a member of industrial engineering since May of 2011.

Pazour Wins International Excellence Fellowship

Jennifer Pazour, an alumna and associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been awarded an International Excellence Fellowship from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Pazour completed her doctoral degree in 2011 and serves on the Department Advisory Committee.

The award will allow Pazour, a leading expert in the use of mathematical models to guide decision making in supply chain and logistics challenges, to collaborate on site with KIT researchers in a three-month stay in the fall of 2022.
