2022 Season Wrap-up

Jeffrey Summers Directing the Band at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium

The 2022 season saw the Best in Sight and Sound perform seven halftime shows, one exhibition, and a host of pep rallies around Northwest Arkansas.

The first two gameday performances of the year are chronicled in the September edition of the band’s newsletter. You can read about those here.

Remaining Razorback Marching Band halftime shows began with students from twenty different high schools attending “Band Day” and “Twirler Day” for the Hogs’ contest against Missouri State. The students joined the band for “Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting” by Elton John after the band’s initial number, a medley of “Tiny Dancer” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” The band then closed with the fan favorite, “NFL Today.”

The RMB showcased a full performance of their Elton John show at both the Texas A&M and Alabama games, adding “I’m Still Standing” and “Rocket Man” to the lineup of Elton John tunes. On October 11th, the band also presented the Elton John show in an exhibition performance at the ASBOA Region VIII Marching Assessment in Fort Smith at Northside High school for 19 local bands and fans.

After five straight weeks of home football games and travel, the band earned a well-deserved break for the rest of October before returning for Homecoming against Liberty on November 5th. The band performed a much-anticipated collection of numbers from “West Side Story.” “Mambo” and “Cool” were followed by a medley including “Tonight,” “Maria,” “America,” and “Gee, Officer Krupke.”

The LSU matchup on November 12th brought chilling cold, but this didn’t stop the band from putting on a patriotic performance in honor of Veterans Day. The RMB performed the “Armed Forces Medley,” with current and retired members asked to stand during their branch’s song while the band spelled out the names of each on the field. “My Country, Tis Thee,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” were also included in the Veteran’s Tribute.

The Senior Salute was presented at the Ole Miss game. The class of 2022 chose “Malagueña” and “Everybody’s Everything” from the 2019 Hispanic Heritage show. The senior show also included “Bohemian Rhapsody” from the 2019 Queen show. Forty-four seniors were recognized on the field of Donald W Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The band’s final performance will come on the field of the 64th Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl where the band will relive their West Side Story show from the Homecoming game.

Alumni Events

One of the highlights of the 2022 season was the return of the Razorback Alumni Band to the field of Razorback Stadium after Covid restrictions in 2020 and 2021 kept the group from fully participating in Homecoming activities. 85 RMB alumni signed up for the day, showing up at 9:30am for registration and instrument checkout. After a brief warmup with Graduate Assistant Jason Reznicek in the HPER, the group headed over to the Walker Indoor Pavilion to rehearse their portion of pregame with the RMB. Whole Hog Café catered a tasty pregame meal, and then several alumni attended the Hogwalk in Lot 44 before lining up to enter the stadium. After pregame, over fifty alumni band members sat with the band in the stands, while others cased their instruments and headed to their seats to watch the game. Unfortunately, the Hogs weren’t on the winning end, but alumni participation in the day made it a resounding success!

Alumni looking to get involved still have an opportunity to participate by joining the Hogwild Band during the holiday break while students are away from campus. Chase Jones, interim director of the Hogwild Band, invites any interested alumni to register for the following games. Space for these spots are extremely limited, so please register as soon as possible.

Pig-Nic

The next Pig-nic will be held on Friday, August 18th, 2023. Each year alumni, parents, and fans are invited on the last day of Early Week to enjoy a meal with the Best in Sight and Sound and see what the band has been working on for their build up to the season.

The 2022 Pig-nic saw 351 registrations for the annual event, all offered a catered meal from Slim Chickens. The Razorback Drumline offered a preview of their popular gameday lot concert while Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma alumni gathered to sing their chapter songs. After the RMB played some fan favorites, including “William Tell” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll,” they moved into their last official rehearsal of the week, working on pregame and the first show of the 2022 season, Arkansas Gameday.

We hope to see you at next year’s Pig-nic!
