College of Engineering Welcomes New Associate Dean for Research
|
|
College of Engineering Dean Kim Needy has appointed Sandra Eksioglu as the college's interim associate dean for research, replacing Heather Nachtmann, who will step down to focus on other professional opportunities. Eksioglu assumes her new duties Jan. 1. Eksioglu joined the college in 2019 as the Jim M. and Marie G. Hefley Professor in Logistics and Entrepreneurship. Her academic interests include operations research, network optimization and algorithmic development, and her work has been funded by National Science Foundation and U.S. departments of energy, transportation and homeland security.

Institute Honors Rainwater with Title of Fellow
|
Professor Chase Rainwater, was awarded the title of fellow from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). This honor recognizes outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial and systems engineering. A fellow is the highest classification of membership in the institute.

Chancellor Emeritus John White Receives Book of the Year Award from IISE
|
John White, chancellor emeritus of the University of Arkansas, received the Joint Publishers Book of the Year Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) for his new book, Why It Matters: Reflections on Practical Leadership, from Greenleaf Book Group Press. This is White’s fourth Book of the Year award from IISE as he was awarded the Joint Publishers Book of the Year Award in 1974, 1986 and 2015.

Nachtmann Named Arkansas Research Alliance Fellow
|
Heather Nachtmann, professor of industrial engineering and the Earl J. and Lillian P. Dyess Endowed Chair in Engineering, has been named an Arkansas Research Alliance Fellow. The ARA Fellows program recognizes scientists and engineers already resident at a university or institution in Arkansas for their ongoing, exemplary contributions to the state’s core research focus areas with a $75,000 grant paid over three years. The program recognizes research leaders with an established history of impact and includes membership into the ARA Academy of Scholars and Fellows.

NSF Grant Administered by I³R to Empower Small Farmers

Led by the Institute for Integrative and Innovative Research (I³R) at the U of A, a cross-disciplinary team of university researchers, consultants and startup companies has been awarded a National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator grant for a project designed to connect regional farmers with institutional buyers and ultimately expand access to healthy and nutritious food. NSF’s Convergence Accelerator was launched in 2019 to build upon basic research and accelerate solutions toward societal impact through convergence — the integration of ideas and approaches across research sectors.

Maritime freight transportation was a hot topic in Fort Smith when stakeholders from across Arkansas and the United States gathered at the WAIA/MARAD Roundtable Event held at the Peak Innovation Center on April 12. Co-organized by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration, Western Arkansas Intermodal Authority, Western Arkansas Planning & Development District and Frontier Metropolitan Planning Organization, the roundtable event focused on current challenges facing maritime and multimodal transportation agencies, carriers and shippers and discussed funding opportunities and innovation solutions to address these challenges.

Outstanding Students Recognized by College of Engineering
|
Students, faculty and staff gathered to honor top students of the College of Engineering at a reception on May 2. In the Department of Industrial Engineering, we had several students recognized. The Senior Scholar Award was given to Jessica Creech. The First Ranked Senior Scholars were: Paris Joslin, Abby Harris, Ashley Stanek, Halle Schneidenwind, Griffin Langford and Ross Harper. In addition to this Abby Harris was also the recipient of the Industrial Engineering Outstanding Senior. Neel Chanchad received the Porter Stone Co-Op Award. The award is given to engineering students who have excelled in cooperation education. Neel interned at Truckish fall 2021 and spring 2022 and then at Walmart summer 2022. He is completed his Ph.D. in spring 2023.

Industrial engineering seniors were honored this spring for two semesters of work solving real-world problems alongside industry partners. During the 2022-23 academic year, 54 industrial engineering seniors participated in the Industrial Engineering Capstone Experience as part of 11 teams of four to five students.

Interdisciplinary Student Teams Tackle Pediatric Challenges in Healthcare Hackathon
|
Tasked with real-world problems from pediatric doctors, a student team's proposal to improve a harness for infants born with a hip abnormality earned $1,000 in a healthcare hackathon organized by the U of A Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation as part of its Northwest Arkansas Biodesign Sprints program. Industrial Engineering students recognized included Fan Bu, doctoral candidate who worked on the Central Venous Catheter project team, junior Danny Santillan who worked with the Infant Hip Dysplasia team and freshman undergraduate student, Kya Novack-Williams, team member on the Urodynamic Testing team.

Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering Celebrates 37th Year with Induction of Fourteen New Members

The Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering, faculty, staff, family and friends gathered on the evening of April 14 to celebrate the induction of 14 new members. This marked the 37th anniversary of the academy. The event was held at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Springdale. The evening was punctuated by the outstanding success of the annual silent auction, which raises funds for scholarships. Donations from the auction totaled $1,400.
