M.S.E.M. Program Joins Elite Group
of Certified Graduate Programs

The Master of Science in Engineering Management graduate program, in the Department of Industrial Engineering has been awarded the status of Certified Graduate Program by the American Society of Engineering Management, known as ASEM.

 

This recognition confirms that the curriculum provides a cutting-edge education covering what engineering managers should know and positions the program in an elite group of only 10 other programs in the country.

College of Engineering Campaign Sets Bold Goal: 1,500 Gifts in 48 Hours

The campaign's theme, "Brewing Innovation: It Doesn't Cost a Lot, Just a Latte," invited engineering alumni to give up their morning latte for a couple of days — with a suggested donation of at least $10 — to support scholarships for students in their department of study. The college's advancement team set a bold goal of achieving a record-breaking 1,500 gifts over 48 hours of the campaign, which took place October 17 and 18.

The campaign raised over $80,000!

I.E. Professor Gives Keynote at International Symposium on Defense

The Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica and the Brazilian Air Force held their 25th Annual Symposium on Operational Applications in Defense Areas at their São José dos Campos on Sept. 27-29.

Greg Parnell, director of the Master of Operations Management and the Master of Engineering Management programs in the Department of Industrial Engineering, was the international keynote speaker at the conference. His topic, "Cognitive Biases and Decision Traps," illustrated the misuse of heuristics in decision making. The presentation was well received by over 500 attendees.

Industrial Engineering Professor Chosen to Lead Master of Science in Engineering Program

Burak Eksioglu, a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering, has been named director of the College of Engineering's Master of Science in Engineering program, an online degree program ideal for working professionals who have a bachelor's degree in engineering or computer science.

 

Eksioglu has more than 20 years of experience leading cross-functional teams in supply chain, logistics and transportation with technical expertise in optimization and data analytics.

The program is highly ranked among online graduate engineering
programs by U.S. News and World Report.
 

Pohl Receives Service Award from ASEM

Ed Pohl, Dean of the Graduate School and International Education, was the recipient of the Franklin B.W. Woodbury Special Service Award from the American Society for Engineering Management. The award is given annually to a member who has demonstrated continued service to ASEM.

Pohl was recognized for his service as Co-Editor for the Journal of Engineering Management, Chair of the Fellow Committee and Chair for the Council of Engineering Management Leaders.

He received the award at the annual ASEM Conference in Boulder, Colorado in October.

Engineering Professor Elected Officer in International Organization

She shared her vision
for INCOSE...

Alice Squires has been elected treasurer of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) for a two-year term starting in January. Squires joined the Department of Industrial Engineering in May as a teaching professor, contributing to the Master of Science in Engineering Management and Operations Management programs.

A member of INCOSE since 2004, Squires is the founder of the INCOSE Empowering Women Leaders in Systems Engineering working group. The mission of the group includes creating an open systems engineering environment welcoming to all and engaging women in engineering and systems engineering at all levels of education around the world.

 

U of A Celebrates Latest Class of Fully
Credentialed ACUE Faculty

Leaders from across campus recently celebrated 18 U of A faculty who demonstrated their commitment to student success by earning their complete Association of Colleges and University Educators certification, the only nationally recognized certificate in effective college instruction. Chimka Spends Sabbatical with

Associate professor Justin Chimka completed a nine-month off-campus duty assignment working with the Intermodal Engineering group at J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., the Fortune 500 transportation company in nearby Lowell, during the 2022-23 academic year.

Crisel Recipient of Tech Integrity Electronic Badge

Rainwater Honored with Paul Cronan Technology Teaching Excellence Award

Rainwater received the award at the recent Faculty Teaching Awards Reception for 2022-23. The annual event is sponsored by the U of A Teaching Academy and recognizes faculty who have received university-level teaching awards during the previous academic year.

Three Inventions from BioDesign Program
Receive Provisional Patents

Industrial engineering senior, Hector Santillan and doctoral candidate Fan Bu were included in those recognized for their novel innovations.

The BioDesign Sprints Program is a partnership between the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the College of Engineering, HealthTech Arkansas and four regional health systems.

Empowering Engineering Students: The Impact of ePortfolios and the Biggadike Innovation Grant

In December 2022, the College of Engineering announced the inaugural recipients of the Biggadike Innovation Grants (BIG). Brandon Crisel, instructor and adviser in the Department of Industrial Engineering, was one of those inaugural recipients.

 

With his grant, Crisel established ePortfolios for students. A purposeful collection of sample student work, ePortfolios include examples that highlight students' learning progression, achievements and evidence of what they can do.

 

Doctoral Student and INFORMS Chapter Recognized

Maryam Kheirandish,doctoral candidate was the the Minority Issues Form Student Poster Competition winner at the INFORMs Annual Meeting in October. Kheirandish is advised by Shengfan Zhang.

The purpose of the MIF Student Poster Competition is to highlight and promote the research of underrepresented students and their advisors.  

In addition to this honor, the U of A INFORMS Student Chapter also earned Honorable Mention in the Student Chapter Annual Awards.

MSOM Staff Member Recipient of
2023 Hoyt H. Purvis Award for Service

The U of A Graduate School and International Education recognized staff and faculty members with the 2023 Hoyt H. Purvis Awards for Service in International Education during an event in celebration of International Education Week.

Mindy Hunthrop, assistant director of Master of Science in Operations Management and Engineering Management Programs was one of three to receive the award.

Luan Ho, Named COE Employee of the Quarter

His One example of his innovative approach...

Behind every successful department is the dedicated IT team that ensures the smooth functioning of technical infrastructure. One such member of the Department of Industrial Engineering is Luan Ho. Ho's innovative solutions, exceptional work ethic and commitment to providing excellent customer service have made him a vital asset.

Ho's selection as College of Engineering Employee of the First Quarter was supported by numerous members of the department, including department head Chase Rainwater, associate professor Shengfan Zhang and professor Sandra Eksioglu, who is also associate dean for research.

 

Hiatt, Named Staff Senate Employee of the Quarter

Jacob Hiatt was recently announced as the recipient of the Staff Senate Employee of the First Quarter - Administrative 2023-24.

Hiatt is fiscal support manager for the Department of Industrial Engineering, working with the Master of Science in Operations and Engineering Management Programs. He has been instrumental in refining complex tuition reimbursement formulas and financial aid processes.

This fall we have added a new member to our team.  Amy Faulkner came to us from Grubbs, Hoskyn, Barton & Wyatt, Inc., an Engineering Consultant firm, where she worked for 18 years in Program Administration, Human Resources, Fiscal Management and more.  She is serving as I.E. Program Assistant where she is taking on some of the HR & Fiscal duties, and other various tasks.
